COVID-19 and Community

The World Health Organization’s primary suggestion for individuals is to stay home and self-isolate to the best of their abilities. WHO offers alternative advice for health professionals and essential workers at this time. Many community leaders and volunteers may not fall under the category of essential workers and are thus continually placing themselves at enormous risk without the guarantee of certain medical and financial support. Based on WHO’s recommendations for community health workers and other guidelines, we have compiled a list of public health recommendations that we suggest you practice and share with your communities.

Important Health Recommendations

Practice social distancing.
This virus is highly contagious, so avoiding crowds will protect not only your health, but also the health of all of those you come in contact with, and the people they come in contact with. This is especially dangerous for people considered essential workers, people who are elderly, immunocompromised, chronically ill or have reduced/no access to healthcare.
Encourage Mask Use.
Masks help prevent the transmission of COVID-19, and it is key that all community members, whether they feel ill or not, interact only when masks are available. If surgical or cloth masks are not available for purchase in your community, there are other options! You can use a bandana, scarf, or other material to wrap around your face. You can also use old t-shirts or cloth to sew homemade masks. The CDC has a guide for how to make your own sew or no-sew mask, in addition to guidelines regarding washing, wearing, and other aspects of face coverings.
Stay home and practice isolation
when possible. Keep up to date with information regarding local news and quarantine.
Avoid touching your face,
especially eyes, mouth and nose. Those are mucous membranes, and the easiest way for the virus to infect.
Avoid all non-essential travel.
You could be putting yourself at unnecessary risk of exposure to the novel coronavirus.

if you, or someone you know, experience fever, coughing and/or shortness of breath.
Wash your hands
thoroughly and frequently with soap and water, or sanitizer. Wash between your fingers, under your nails, and all sides of your hands for at least 20 seconds. Here is an easy to follow video on how to wash hands. Encourage others to wash their hands for 20 seconds by sharing a well-known song that lasts 20 seconds!
